Recently people have been going on to Google Maps and Google Earth and finding a town just off the A59 called Argleton. People have been to the place where Google say it is and finding a field. Argleton doesn’t exist and the place name is strangely an anagram of “Not Real G”. But people have found businesses that apparently run there. The person who first noticed this mistake, Mike Nolan said "I grew up in the area and spotted on the map one day that it said 'Argleton'," he says. "But it's just a farmer's field close to the village hall and playing fields. I think a footpath goes across the field, but that's all. The name 'Argleton' is similar to 'Aughton'. Maybe someone made a mistake when keying in the name?".
This was noticed more than a year ago but it has only been noticed by lots of people now. The name Aughton was what Mike thought might be what they had replaced it with but you can still find Aughton on Google Earth and Maps. This remains a mystery to many people but we will have to wait and see what happens next.
